So we’re heading into July and things are starting to hot up once more on the entertainment circuit with some cool returning TV shows and awesome movies. We round up the celebs to watch out for this month in the July Celeb Zone.

Naturi Naughton

Naturi Naughton (Fame, Mad Men) is back on our screens this July as the manipulative and decadent Tasha St Patrick in season three of Power but she’s had one hell of a journey.

As a former member of the RnB group, 3LW Naughton alleged at mistreatment and disrespect from the group’s management team which ultimately led her to walk out of the group. This was a pretty brave thing to do because at the time, her career was on uncertain ground.

We decided to feature her on the July Celeb zone for her talent, courage and cool head all of which combined to ensure she didn’t give up:

“It could have ended my entire career or it could have stunted my growth and my passion for the business in general. But I had the ability and the talent and the support system to get back on my feet and be here, where I am today.” (Mr. Joe Walker, EurWeb)

The third season of Power airs on Starz (USA) on Sunday July 17 where you can expect a lot more deception and drama from Tasha St Patrick.

Bear Grylls

Bear Grylls is our new favorite Brit with his Boy Scout love of the outdoors and adventure and he’s back on our screens this July.  He really came into his own in the States where he managed to get a whole host of celebs including Kate Winslet, Kate Hudson and Zac Efron to trek through the wilderness but his ultimate coup was convincing President Obama to do the same!

Grylls’ on-screen character is a fascinating watch because he’s ultimately playing himself although we will never truly know the origin of all his secrets. As a former Special Forces soldier serving in Britain with the Navy and the Marines, he’s been in situations ordinary folk can’t even imagine.

Running Wild with Bear Grylls returns for season three on July 11 on NBC where he puts some of the world’s most well-known celebrities through their paces as they take on the challenge to survive in the wilderness. Expect to see appearances from Courtney Cox, Vanessa Hudgens among other famous faces.

Melissa McCarthy

Who doesn’t love Melissa McCarthy? After she really shot to fame in Bridesmaids with her show-steeling performance as the weird but relatable, Megan, she’s been a firm favorite for guaranteed belly-aching laughs and we’re stoked that she’s going to be returning to our movie theaters this July in the re-make of Ghostbusters. Here she plays Abby Bergan alongside Kristen Wiig as ghost hunter authors who embark on a bigger, slimier adventure than they bargained for.

As well as being one of the funniest, most talented actress-comedians alive, she’s also a revolutionary in Hollywood for bulldozing her way through three of Hollywood’s most steadfast rules. According to the Guardian, when it comes to big blockbusters you’re highly unlikely to see a comedy with a female lead or a female lead over the age of 35 or a female over a UK size 10. McCarthy has broken all of these rules:

“People say to me, ‘These characters are crazy’, and I’m like, ‘Are they?’…Because I’ve seen three people in Rite Aid drug store act like that…There are women in the world like this, we’re just not used to seeing them portrayed… But I really love a female character who is not playing by the rules.” (The Guardian)

Don’t miss McCarthy is Ghostbusters this July. It’s going to be epic.

Margot Robbie

Starring in the first installment of what is likely to be the new Tarzan franchise (box office pending), Australian actress Margot Robbie is a rising star and you will be seeing a lot of her from now on.

She’s not just a new beauty though, according to Entertainment Online she was talking on the Jimmy Kimmel show recently and divulged her awkward teenage photos along with her “massive Harry Potter nerd” confessions. We love how she isn’t afraid of showing the world that even beautiful Hollywood actresses go through those embarrassing teenage years which is one of the reasons we think she’s so uber cool now!

Matt Damon

It seems like a lifetime ago when we watched the beautiful tale of bromance with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Good Will Hunting. Since then both have had successful careers but this July it’s all about Matt Damon and his return as Jason Bourne in the latest instalment of the Bourne franchile of the same name.

He’s out promoting his new movie with some very original material. Rather than reel himself out on TV shows from couch to couch, he’s created a super cool prank video where members of the public are given the chance to get the feel of being real life spies! We mostly admire Damon’s believable spy-lingo where he talks four different people to follow his every command resulting in a highly addictive and watchable clip according to Time Magazine. Check it out yourself and tell us what you think.

Melissa O’Neil

Melissa O’Neil began her career on Broadway with her impeccable voice and has since moved into TV with great success in Dark Matter, a sci-fi show based on the comic book of the same name. She returns as Two / Portia Lin and existing fans will be excited as the end of series one left on so many cliffhangers, they are burning for answers! However, it’s not clear that any solid answers will come but season two promises a lot of kick-butt action and suspense with Two/Portia at the heart.

O’Neil  herself is also in the dark about where he character is heading but talked to TV Eh about why Two is groundbreaking for the sci-fi genre:

“In a lot of science fiction shows, a woman in this role would have a very sexualized element to her. And, not that there isn’t one, but the sexualized element to Two isn’t found in the way she interacts with other people in a sexually explicit way; it’s an undertone of femininity that’s already there in her diplomacy, in the way she fights, in her body language.” (TV-EH)
